McLaren and Honda officially split

It’s finally happened, after three years of consistent breakdowns… McLaren and Honda have officially split.

McLaren will use Renault engines for the next three seasons, and with this deal it is expected that Fernando Alonso will stay with the team.

Honda’s return to F1 with McLaren has been disastrous since it came back to the grid in 2015, with a lack of performance and constant reliability problems holding the once-successful partnership back during its second iteration.

The relationship has become so fractious during 2017 that it became clear a split was likely, with Renault emerging as McLaren’s only realistic alternative.

As we revealed earlier this week this is potentially part of a deal meaning Honda will now “power” the Toro Rosso team.
