Well, one of the most underated drivers on the grid, Carlos Sainz Jr, has signed a deal to drive for Renault in 2018. Leaving the Toro Rosso squad.
It is beleived this is part of a deal for between Toro Rosso and Renault to end their engine deal sooner.
It’s triggered a domino effect, in short…
- Sainz joins Renault for 2018 (Presumably replacing Palmer)
- Toro Rosso swap Renault engines for Honda engines
- McLaren ditch Honda and get Honda engines
- Pierre Gasly expected to join Toro Rosso in 2018
Talks were intense during the Italian Grand Prix weekend as a solution to the McLaren Honda dialema was being searched for.
Renault were looking to swap their supply from Toro Rosso to McLaren, hence why Sainz bacame a key for the deal. Renault hope Sainz and Hulkenberg can push the team forward.
Although the deal is announced for 2018, the Spaniard could potentially drive for the French outfit as soon as this years Malaysian Grand Prix.
If Sainz jumps to Renault, it’s almost definate that Gasly will get the call to join Daniil “Torpedo” Kvyat at Toro Rosso.
It is thought that all the deals will be complete by the start of next week, to ensure that announcements can be made ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.
