Mercedes have revealed that talks over a 2018 deal with the Finn are ongoing.
Valtteri Bottas could well have secured himself a Mercedes seat for 2018 as Mercedes announce that a new deal is being discussed with the Fin. Before joining Mercedes, Bottas had never won in the top tier of open wheel motorsports and within his first four races for the team, he had done just that.
In just 11 races with Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team, Valterri has secured 2 race wins, 2 pole positions and 8 podiums. He has had an incredible run of form and has proved his worth to the likes of Toto Wolff and the rest of the grid, showing his determination to retain his spot in the future.
The Brackley-based team immediately made Bottas their preferred replacement for reigning world champion Nico Rosberg after his shock exit from the sport. Bottas was quickly snapped up with a 1-year contract and the target to become world champion and in doing so, earn a contract extension.
After impressing all season round, the Finn sits third in the standings, just 19 points behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton. And with F1’s August break from the track, attention is brought towards the paddock and who will be where next year. Wolff has admitted that a new contract has been brought up in discussions with Valtteri Bottas, 27, and told Sky Sports “It’s a good time to talk and to think things through,”
“We had some good discussions with Valtteri before Hungary and I’d certainly like to dash over to Asia for the final races with a decision”
Wolff has given Bottas the deadline of the Singapore Grand Prix on September 17th for a decision to have been made on his future. However Bottas doesn’t seem to oflustered by going into the second half of the season without a seat for next year saying :
“There could be some progres to be made on that during the break [2018 seat] because obviously the last month has been pretty hectic,”
“For sure there is some time but there is no rush, we don’t need to get anything done before Spa”
Bottas is expected to accept this offer in the coming weeks. Contract length and value is still unknown.
